Green is a color that is fairly rare in tarantulas, at least when compared to other colors such as blue, red, and purple. However, Psalmopoeus cambridgei is a good example of how tarantulas can really shine with the color green. This species and genus differ from your typical Avicularia arboreals by burrowing down into the substrate to make a small home near or in the ground of their enclosure. Armed with their fast speed, faded green color, and chevron patterning on their abdomen, this species is a treat to watch hunt their prey. The slings for this species start out as black and orange, like their cousin P. irminia, and grow up into a lean, mean, green hunting machine. P. cambridgei are an amazing display spider for those that find their Avicularia to be a bit too tame.
Psalmopoeus cambridgei are isolated on Trinidad and Tobago. This owes them their common name of the “Trinidad Chevron”. Females can attain a legspan of a solid 6 inches at fully grown, but some specimens have been claimed to have reached 7 inches. Males of this species get around 5 inches, and have a very adorable change in appearance upon maturity. While they do gray out upon reaching sexual maturity, the males gain an adorable set of pipe cleaner hairs on their legs. This gives them a very dense appearance to their legs. This species is a great pick if you’re ready to dip your toes into a species a bit more akin to an old world.
