Of the three Theraphosa species in the hobby, the Theraphosa stirmi is one of the more common of the three species to find. While they donβt have the amount of hair the T. blondi does, or the wine red color the T. apophysis has, they have their own attributes that make them a great species. With the lower amount of hair, the true chocolatey velvet of the legs can be more easily appreciated than in T. blondi or T. apophysis. T. stirmi are large bodied tarantulas that are absolutely stunning to see in person. When hobbyists think of massive tarantulas, Theraphosa comes to mind. Watching this species hulk around its enclosure is always a pleasure to watch, especially when it darts and pounces on prey like a freight train.
Native to northern South American countries, such as Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil, Theraphosa stirmi is a species that thrives in amazon-like conditions. Reaching an astonishing size of 9 to 11 inches for both females and males, this species is a sight to behold. If the husbandry can be handled, then this spider will be one youβll always want to give a bit of distance, as they are as fast as they are big. Not to mention their urticating hairs and massive fangs; Theraphosa demand respect, and they return to you with being an absolute stunner of a display species.
