Probably one of the more striking species of Psalmopoeus, the P. victori not only has a cool species name, but a cool common name as well. Often called the “Darth Maul Tarantula” due to its black and red coloration, this Mexican species has a bold black front, followed by a smooth red rear half. Slings and juveniles of this species have a faint green shine to their abdomen, giving them an extra color to look forward to! This species webs rather heavily as well, especially as a sling into the juvenile stages.
Native to Veracruz, Mexico, this humid arboreal is probably the most northern species of Psalmopoeus known to science. Females can get to a modest 6 inches, with some specimens getting an inch larger or smaller. Apart from the “Darth Maul” common name, this species is also known as the “Mexican Half and Half Tarantula” for those that don’t find the Star Wars name to be appropriate for the species. For the hobbyists that want a bit more edge to their arboreals, the P. victori is a great addition!
