Likely to be what the hobby has known as the “Grammostola pulchra”, this sleek Uruguayan beauty is the spider many consider the “black labrador” tarantula from how docile and calm they are as adults, and it's a moniker that's not unearned. The black hairs on the G. quirogai give the spider an appearance of a matte and velvety black over their body, abdomen, and legs. Their calm demeanor and large size make them a great display species to contrast against their surroundings.
G. quirogai come from Northern Uruguay and the southern state of Brazil, Rio Grande Do Sul. Females of this species can get 7 inches and possibly larger. The common name for this species is the “Uruguayan Black Beauty” tarantula, which is pretty on point. This species is long lived, and may take a bit of time to grow to an adult, but that makes the journey all the more rewarding when you have a giant velvet beauty wandering about.
