Not the original “Brachypelma smithi” that is now Brachypelma hamorii. This species of red knee tarantula is very similar to B. hamorii, but with stronger orange coloration and slightly larger adult size. Originally called “Brachypelma annitha”, this species was changed to B. smithi in 2017. B. smithi is a great starter tarantula, as they come from an arid region of Mexico, and have rather easy care requirements.

Brachypelma smithi comes from the coastal region south of Guerrero, in southwestern Mexico. Females can exceed 6 inches in legspan, and males often take on an orange carapace after maturing, giving them a unique appearance when compared to B. hamorii males.
