For those that found a liking to Avicularia avicularia, but want something with a color other than navy blue, this species is for you. While they don’t have the pink toes the genus is often labeled with, they do have a similar demeanor to the hobby’s common A. avicularia. This species starts out black and grey, and grows into their purples. As adults, this species has a gorgeous metallic purple shine to them.
A. purpurea is from primarily Ecuador, east of the Andean mountains. However, they can also be found in Peru and Colombia’s lowland regions. Females can get around 5 inches. This species can usually be fairly tame, similar to other Avicularia, but do watch out for their abdomens. They can easily shoot waste from their rear if they feel disturbed, as well as rub their urticating hairs on whatever tries to grab ahold of them. That aside, this species is rather easy to keep, and makes a wonderful purple spider that makes a webbed retreat far from the ground if given the anchor points to do so.
