A solid white and black tarantula isn’t something very common to find with tarantulas. Vitalius chromatus (or Nhandu chromatus) is a species that takes pride in its black and white coloration. Equipped with white bands and stripes up and across their black legs, as well as a mostly white carapace, these spiders are hard to miss in their enclosure. These spiders offer a ferocious feeding response, as well as a fast response to perceived danger. If you’re looking for a slow spider, this may not be the right pick for you.
V. chromatus comes from northeastern Brazil, around Maranhão. Females can reach a good 6 inches in legspan, with males being a tad smaller. This spider has been often called the “Brazilian Red and White”, and is often compared to the similarly marked Acanthoscurria geniculata. Though, this species doesn’t get as big, so it's much easier to make room for!
