Black, white, and covered in macabre imagery. Ephebopus murinus is a beautiful South American species that any horror fan would enjoy. With a white carapace, black legs, and bone-like patterning on each leg; it makes sense why this species is adored by so many hobbyists. E. murinus takes a different direction than the others in Ephebopus by having a monotone appearance as an adult. Worry not, as the slings of this species still do have a bit of color in the form of a metallic emerald abdomen that shines back at you. This species does have a bit of a climbing tendency as slings, but do turn to the ground as they grow up, making wide silken funnels that lead to their deep burrows. This genus also has a very unique mode of defense; as Ephebopus have urticating hairs on their pedipalps that they flick off whatever direction they’re facing.
Ephebopus murinus come from a couple South American countries, such as Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, as well as Brazil. This species has a good bit of range in South America, even reaching as far south as central Brazil, near Mato Grosso. E. murinus is affectionately given the common name “Skeleton Leg Tarantula” and “Skeleton Knee” and “Yellow Kneed Skeleton Tarantula”. All of which make a note of this species’ beautiful markings. Females of this species can reach over 6 inches. For those that want to take a bit of a jump to something a bit more intermediate, but still want to stay in New World territory, then Ephebopus murinus is a great choice!
