Cyriocosmus. The definitive dwarf tarantula genus. The Cyriocosmus elegans, or Trinidad Dwarf Tarantula, is a small species that has the iconic “Heart butt” on its abdomen. This reflective patch of urticating hairs is what gave it a common name of “Heart Butt Tarantula” in some tarantula circles. This species has a lot of patterning and flair. A black triangle on an orange carapace like Brachypelma emilia, black femurs and grey legs, as well as tiger stripes on the side of the abdomen. Females of this species also only get around 2 inches as fully grown adults, so if you’re having issues with space, then this tarantula is perfect for you.
C. elegans is native to Trinidad, Tobago, and a portion of northern Venezuela. This species does tend to burrow down into its substrate, making tunnels lined with light webbing. The biggest issue some hobbyists have with this species comes down to finding food for the slings, as the spiderlings are tiny. Though, if you have no issues cutting up feeders down to a more appropriate size, or using fruit flies, then this species should be no problem to keep!
