Quick facts

Adult size
About 4.5 inches (females)
From
South-central US and northern Mexico
Type
New World

Probably the most prevalent tarantula species in the midwestern United States, the Aphonopelma hentzi is everywhere. These spiders have black legs, a cream colored carapace, and a hazelnut brown abdomen. A humble looking species that has the monopoly of claim to a fourth of America as its habitat. Of course, captive bred slings are the way to go. It’s the best way to get a healthy spider and to prevent damage to the wild population by taking a mature male from outside.

The range of A. hentzi is rather impressive. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri. Oh, and northern Mexico, too. Females can reach a size of 4.5 inches. Just because a spider is common doesn’t make it any less cool to raise.
